The Philippine National Police (PNP) executed a substantial crackdown on illegal drug activities, culminating in the destruction of over ₱69 million worth of marijuana plants across the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR). The eradication efforts took place through a series of operations conducted from March 16 to 22, 2026, primarily focused in Benguet province.

Weeklong Operations Yield Significant Results

During the intensive weeklong drive, police operatives conducted a total of 24 distinct marijuana eradication operations. According to PNP records, these operations resulted in the destruction and confiscation of approximately 72,900 fully grown marijuana plants, 420 seedlings, and over 454,000 grams of dried marijuana leaves, stalks, and fruiting tops. The PNP estimated the combined value of these illegal drugs at ₱69,172,200.00.

Pursuing Justice in the Fight Against Drugs

PNP Chief, Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr., commended the commitment displayed by the operatives involved in these significant operations. “Hindi natin titigilan ang laban kontra ilegal na droga. Tuloy-tuloy ang ating operasyon, lalo na sa mga lugar na ginagamit sa pagtatanim at produksyon. Sa tulong ng komunidad, mas mapapalakas pa natin ang kampanyang ito,” stated Nartatez.

His remarks underlined the PNP’s ongoing commitment to eradicate illegal drug distribution on a national scale, emphasizing that the eradication of marijuana is just one part of the broader campaign against illegal drug activities.

Alignment with National Policy and Community Engagement

The eradication campaign is a response to directives from the national government, specifically under President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s administration. The efforts are consistent with the PNP’s Focused Agenda under Enhanced Managing Police Operations, reinforcing intelligence-driven tactics to target illegal drug sources more effectively.

Public awareness and community involvement are critical to the success of these initiatives. Nartatez highlighted the importance of collaboration with local communities, expressing that their assistance can significantly enhance the effectiveness of drug campaigns.

Understanding the Scope of Drug Production in Cordillera

The Cordillera region has long been susceptible to illegal drug farming, particularly marijuana, due to its mountainous terrain which provides natural cover for cultivation. The area’s climate and geography are conducive to growing marijuana, leading to its prominence as one of the country’s critical regions for marijuana production. Authorities note that persistent eradication challenges stem from revitalized farming methods that adapt quickly to law enforcement actions.

Statistics and Data on Drug-Related Issues

The operations conducted this week add to a series of successful campaigns throughout the year. For context, the PNP reported that operations over the past year resulted in the destruction of over 500,000 marijuana plants, valued at nearly ₱450 million. This ongoing effort is critical considering the high rates of drug dependency observed in various communities.

PNP data indicate that drug-related activities are often linked to broader social issues, including poverty and crime. With the damaging effects of narcotics on communities and families, the PNP emphasizes that sustained operations are necessary to protect public safety and well-being.

Local Implications of Drug Eradication Efforts

Communities within and adjacent to the Cordillera Region are directly affected by these drug eradication measures. Enhanced police presence and operations often lead to increased alerts about drug safety and security in local areas. Community members are encouraged to report suspicious activities, aiding police efforts in dismantling drug operations.

The PNP’s focus on building trust with communities also serves as a deterrent against drug production and distribution in potentially vulnerable areas. The agency’s goal is to engender a united front against illegal drug activities by promoting transparency and cooperation.

Future Directions for PNP Drug Campaigns

Looking ahead, General Nartatez confirmed that PNP operations will not relent but will expand into other identified areas where illegal drug farming is evident. “We assure the public that operations will continue until we dismantle all identified illegal drug sources,” he stated.

Moreover, the PNP is advocating for stricter penalties against drug-related offenses as part of its bid for a “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman” initiative. This campaign aims at not just eradicating drugs but also ensuring both responsive and responsible policing.

The Larger Context of Drug Use in the Philippines

The pervasive problem of drug use in the Philippines remains a significant concern for both the national government and local communities. As reported by the Dangerous Drugs Board, drug use remains a pressing public health crisis, with upward trends in various narcotics, including methamphetamine and marijuana. The link between drug use and increased crime rates presents continuous challenges that the PNP aims to tackle by fighting drug production as well as emphasizing rehabilitation efforts for users.

The recent crackdown in the Cordillera region is part of a broader strategy that echoes international best practices, seeking to address the issue comprehensively rather than through enforcement alone. While immediate results are important, the long-term strategy involves community engagement, education, and health intervention.
